How to play Sudoku

Sudoku is a number-placement puzzle on a 9×9 grid. Fill every empty cell so that each row, each column and each 3×3 box contains the digits 1 to 9 exactly once. Every puzzle here has one solution, and you can deal a new one as often as you like.

Select a cell, then pick a digit. Clashing digits turn red straight away. Use Notes to pencil in candidates, Undo to step back, and Hint to reveal a cell when you are stuck. Your puzzle is saved in your browser as you play.

Sudoku questions

Are the Sudoku puzzles unique?

Yes. Each puzzle is generated in your browser and checked to have exactly one solution.

What is the difference between Easy, Medium and Hard?

Harder puzzles start with fewer given digits: about 40 on Easy, 32 on Medium and as few as 26 on Hard.

How do notes work in Sudoku?

Turn on Notes and pick digits to pencil small candidates into a cell. They are cleared automatically when you place that digit in the same row, column or box.
