How to play Mahjong

Mahjong Solitaire is a tile-matching puzzle played with a mahjong set. The tiles are stacked in a layout several layers deep, and you clear them two at a time by matching identical tiles. Remove every tile to win.

Only free tiles can be taken: a tile is free when nothing lies on top of it and its left or right side is open. Blocked tiles are shown slightly darker. Any flower matches any other flower, and any season any other season. Every deal here has at least one solution; if you run out of moves, Shuffle rearranges the remaining tiles and Undo takes back a pair. The Classic layout is the 144-tile turtle, and Small is a 72-tile pyramid that suits a phone.

Mahjong questions

Which tiles can I match in Mahjong Solitaire?

Two identical tiles that are both free: nothing on top, and an open left or right side. Flowers match any flower and seasons match any season.

Is every Mahjong deal solvable?

Yes. Each deal is built from a known winning order, so a solution always exists. You can still play into a dead end, which is what Shuffle and Undo are for.

What do the Mahjong tiles show?

Three suits numbered 1 to 9 (dots, bamboo and characters), the four winds marked E, S, W and N, three dragons, and flower and season tiles. The character suit uses plain numerals so it is easy to read.
