How to play 2048

2048 is a sliding number puzzle. Every move slides all the tiles in one direction; two tiles with the same number merge into one tile worth their sum. A new 2 or 4 appears after each move, and the game ends when the board is full and nothing can merge.

Reach the 2048 tile to win, then keep going for 4096 and beyond. Undo takes back up to 30 moves, and the 5×5 and 6×6 boards give you more room to build. Your game is saved in your browser, so you can close the tab and come back.

2048 rules

• Every move slides all tiles as far as they can go in one direction.
• Two touching tiles with the same number merge into one worth their sum.
• A tile can merge only once per move.
• A new 2 or 4 appears after every move that changes the board.
• You win at 2048 and lose when no move is possible.
