How to play Crossword

A crossword is a word puzzle on a grid of white and black squares. Each numbered clue leads to a word that runs across or down, and where words cross they share a letter, so every answer you fill in helps with the next.

Select a square and type. The clue for the current word is shown above the grid; select the same square again, or press Space, to switch between Across and Down. Puzzles are built fresh each time from a list of everyday words with straightforward clues, in Small, Medium or Large. Check marks any wrong letters, and Reveal fills in the current word.

Crossword rules

• Every clue has one answer, written one letter per white square.
• Across answers run left to right and Down answers top to bottom, starting at the numbered square.
• Where two answers cross, they share the same letter.
• The number in brackets after a clue is the length of the answer.
• The puzzle is solved when every white square holds the right letter.
